Between songs we’ll share some history and fun facts about our featured songsters. Both Dawes and the late Tom Petty have been incredibly talented American rockers with bold lyrics and quirky one-liners, inspiring listeners with words of love, triumph, despair, memories, and all the while enjoying what they do. Tom Petty once said “the most important thing is: Have a good time. Don’t take it too seriously. You’ve got to take it seriously enough that it happens. But don’t let anything throw you.” This sentiment seems to be echoed in the Dawes song “Things Happen, that’s all they ever do…’
Dawes, an American folk-rock band formed in the Los Angeles suburb of North Hills, is comprised of brothers Taylor Goldsmith (lead vocals/guitar) and Griffin Goldsmith (drums), with their high school pal Wylie Gelber (bass). In 2009 Dawes debuted their first album ‘North Hills’ and for more than a decade they recorded a spree of lovable albums inspired by Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger, pairing expansive narrative lyricism with profuse technical guitar work. Their 2011 album release ‘Nothing is Wrong’ features piano contributions from Benmont Tench of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
Existing on the fringes of official jam band status, these rockers’ live sets often dabble in improvisation, while still erring on the side of concision. Having recruited keyboard wizard Lee Pardini in 2015, their sonic landscape continues to expand More recently, Dawes toured as the ensemble for Phil Lesh of Grateful Dead, and shared the stage with Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters.
We’re honored to name our tribute series after the memorable Dawes song / album “All Your Favorite Bands” with the anthemic refrain:
