“En Plein Air” is a French ex-pression meaning “in the open air,” and refers to the act of painting out-doors. The name was first used to describe the Impressionists in France as they attempted to achieve an “intense impression of outdoor daylight and open air” in their paintings, whether in oil paints or in watercolor. Currently, artists use more of a variety of media, pastels, color pencils and acrylics paints, too. Capturing a landscape in the wind and sun is no small task, and changing light and weather adds to the fun of painting outdoors! The “Making a Scene” show title doesn’t require you to paint a public disturbance, just paint what you see.
For five years since 2018, a Shared Interest group called the Plein Air Artist Group, sponsored by Belmar Arts, have met at various locations around the county to paint, share insights and tips for painting out of doors (with the bugs and the sand and the windy days!) and to enjoy the camaraderie of their fellow painters.
Sites have included MaClearie Park in Belmar, Asbury Park at Sunset Lake, Deep Cut Gardens in Middletown, Dog Beach in Belmar, and many more.
