In the 17th century, Europeans were accumulating collections of objects in rooms or cabinets that came to be known as Cabinets of Wonder, Cabinets of Curiosities, or Wunderkammer (chamber of marvels). These precursors of the modern museum were designed to contain all the knowledge of the known world in one space. They presented ethnographic artifacts, anatomical models, automata, archaeological finds, classical sculptures, shells and coral, exotic drugs, watches and machinery, rocks and minerals, stuffed animals, fantasy creatures, paintings, ceramics, mammoth bones, scientific instruments, occult objects, human and animal oddities, and other examples of rare and exotic materials.
We will be creating a 21st century version of a Cabinet of Curiosities with the entries in this exhibit which can include any type of art or object that evokes curiosity or wonder in the viewer. The exhibit is open to all media (including video and sound). Works that have have been previously displayed at BAC are also welcome if they fit the theme. We especially welcome your Steampunk style creations for a themed wall in the exhibit.
This is an open exhibit (NOT juried) so all your entries should be dropped off on
Friday, October 8 or Saturday, October 9 from 10am to 1pm.
There will be an award of a book titled " Cabinet of Curiosities" (by director Guillermo Del Toro) to the curator's favorite work.
