Mike Dawson, author of the middle-grade graphic novel series The Fifth Quarter, brings “Cartooning Lessons, How Comics Work and What They Have Taught Me” to the Belmar Arts Center.
When you think of comics perhaps you think about Spider-man… or more likely you think about Dog Man. But comics can be about anything. There are no rules to limit you. Aspiring cartoonists can learn a lot simply by writing about the world around them. Something funny, something memorable, something sad, the simple act of writing helps you improve your craft, better understand yourself, and can sometimes open unexpected creative doors.
Students will be shown a short presentation where they will learn some of the nuts & bolts of making comics, the importance of strong character design and how artists draw inspiration from the world around them. They will be encouraged and inspired to start and maintain their own creative practices and to begin seeing the world as writers.
Following the presentation, students will work with the instructor on a series of cartooning activities laid out in a comics-workbook. The instructor will sit with each of them individually and guide them.
Mike Dawson is the award-winning author of several graphic novels and comics collections, including the Junior Library Guild selected middle-grade series, The Fifth Quarter. His work has appeared at The Nib, Slate, Romper, and The New Yorker, and has been nominated for multiple Eisners and Ignatzes, as well shortlisted for the Slate Cartoonists Studio Prize.
