2021 A Cabinet of Curiosities
Exhibit Date: October 13 to November 19, 2021
Curator: Louise Krasniewicz
In the 17th century, Europeans were accumulating collections of objects in rooms or cabinets that came to be known as Cabinets of Wonder, Cabinets of Curiosities, or Wunderkammer (chamber of marvels). These precursors of the modern museum were designed to contain all the knowledge of the known world in one space. They presented ethnographic artifacts, anatomical models, automata, archaeological finds, classical sculptures, shells and coral, exotic drugs, watches and machinery, rocks and minerals, stuffed animals, fantasy creatures, paintings, ceramics, mammoth bones, scientific instruments, occult objects, human and animal oddities, and other examples of rare and exotic materials.
We created a 21st century version of a Cabinet of Curiosities with the 85 entries in this exhibit by 27 artists which includes any sorts of art and objects that evoke curiosity or wonder in the viewer. The exhibit was open to all media and the variety of works makes the display exciting and fun.
