Honoring Stelma Sancious
and her son,
Rock n Roll Hall of Famer,
David Sancious
What is this all about?
Belmar is about to celebrate its 150th Anniversary and the Belmar Arts Center has come up with an idea that will live beyond the 150th birthday celebration and contribute to life, music, and art in Belmar for years to come. As a way of reflecting their appreciation for their 18 years of generosity, support, and partnership with the town, Belmar Arts Center would like to honor Stelma Sancious and her son, international and multi-instrumentalist, Belmar's own David Sancious. (Official website) by donating an amazing outdoor piano. Pyanoe Plaza in Belmar will be the new home of this high-tech piano and serve as a musical center for the community.
David and Stelma Sancious
David was born in Long Branch in 1953, and when the family relocated from Asbury Park to Belmar, N.J., a piano was included along with the purchase of the new house on E Street. After the boxes and furniture were brought in, his mother, Stelma, sat at the piano and began to play beautiful classical piano selections, much to his amazement. The effect was instantaneous. "Music became the most interesting and beautiful thing in the world to me, and being able to express all that beauty and magic was all I wanted."
The Legendary "E Street Band" name
David was an original member of the E Street Band from 1972 to 1973. The band took its name from the street in Belmar, New Jersey, where Sancious' mother lived. She allowed the band to rehearse in her garage. "Without David Sancious, there would be no E Street Band. Which is to say that one night in 1973 as the band returned home from touring in Texas, the van pulled up to Mr. Sancious' childhood home at 1105 E Street in Belmar and Springsteen now had a name for the band. According to Springsteen:
“My recollection is we were on the bus one night trying to come up with a band name,” said Springsteen in response to a question from an audience member. “E Street Band" seemed pretty easy -- it just had a nice ring to it ....... E Street. E Street. Well, David lives on E Street, David was a big, important part of the band at the time and it just came up.”
