Fiber Fridays Interest Group

We are a diverse and creative group who make art with materials of all kinds, including fabric, paper, baskets, beads, yarn, thread, fleece, and found objects. We sew, collage, build, design, knit, crochet, embroider, and enhance our art in many different ways.

Each meeting involves a supportive discussion of our current work and often a demonstration of equipment, tools, and techniques for collage, mixed media, and fiber arts..

Past Fiber Fridays

At our September 2022 meeting, we shared work from the past few months and then Sheila demonstrated the art of beading. Thanks for sharing both the instructions and your beautiful beads.

At our March 2022 meeting we explored rubber stamp art.  Louise and several other people brought their stamp collections to share.  We also shared some of the work we had made in the past few months.
At our November 2021 Fiber Fridays in-person meeting, Sheila demonstrated basic embroidery stitches and how to stitch words.

At a our Fiber Fridays meeting online in September, 2021, we had a demonstration by Susan Fix of spinning yarn using a drop spindle.

At a July 2021 Fiber Fridays meeting online, Ali Bowie demonstrated a technique to beautify the common flip-flop. Here is a video of her instructions and some images of some examples both from the class and by people at other times.
For our first in-person meeting for the  mixed media group, June 25, 2021, we did an experiment in collage. We applied different techniques to the same collage which started off with some wallpaper samples, old magazines, and a scan&cut machine, then we added some stitching and some text from old greeting cards. Some of us shared works we had done during the COVID lockdown. Check out some of our results in the slide show below.
At the October 29th Mixed Media meeting, we discussed the history of Cabinets of Curiosities and then constructed miniature laser cut wooden cabinets. All the cabinets were finished at home and we have these wonderful results:

At the AUGUST 27th meeting Mixed Media:
We discussed the odd history of paper dolls and the possibilities of paper dolls as a mixed media form.
Paper dolls have been a form of both child and adult play for more than 200 years. They were an inexpensive way to experiment with fashion ideas and also enact scenes from popular newspaper comic strips in the early part of the 20th century.

Paper Dolls to cut out: download and print on letter size paper. Cardstock is best but regular printer paper is fine.

Postponed class:
Instructions for a mosaic quilt

Picture
1-Please bring a simple photo of your favorite animal, bird, bug, flower etc. printed and centered on regular printer paper. This is my cheeky seagull.

2-On a second piece of printer paper, trace the outline and major parts (wings, eyes, etc.) of your photo with a sharpie.

3-Please look at this video of a lizard mosaic quilt to get an idea of what we will doing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiiSpIhtNDA
4- We will have fusible, fabric cut into 3/8 inch squares (batiks work best for this, the weave is tighter so it frays less).  We will also have larger pieces (9x12 approximately) of “grout” fabric to put behind your tiles.  If you have suitable fabric you wish to cut and share, please bring it along.
